Depression
Depressive disorder, or depression, is a common mental health condition that can happen to anyone. It is characterized by a low mood or loss of pleasure or interest in activities for long periods of time. This is different from regular mood changes and feelings about everyday life.
SYMPTOMS
Sadness, loss of interest, disturbed sleep, changes in appetite, low self worth, thoughts of dying, hopelessness, tiredness, poor concentration​
DURATION
​Symptoms must be present for at least two weeks
CAUSES
A complex interaction of social, psychological, and biological factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, and stressful life events
RISK FACTORS
People who have experienced abuse, severe losses, or other stressful events are more likely to develop depression
TREATMENT
Effective treatment is available for mild, moderate, and severe depression
